Beast From The East – Looking after your pets in cold weather

We have just been informed that we are having an artic blast this week. The warning of Storm Emma is set to hit the UK on Thursday and Friday, bringing heavy snow, blizzards and high winds. These are a few precautions you should take for your pets at home.

1/ Keep your cats inside at night

2/ Cover rabbits with an insulated cover or even bring them indoors or put into a cage in the shed away from the very cold wind chill.

3/ When walking your dog remember to rinse their paws on their return. The road salts can damage their pads. You can purchase paw butter from Amazon or any other good pet store.

4/ Single coated dogs (very little undercoat) may need a jacket to keep the cold out.

Here is an example of single coated breeds, (Basset Hound, English Bulldog, Pug, Toy Fox Terrier, Dalmatian, Vizsla, German Shorthaired Pointer).

5/ Please be aware that ice can also damage dogs paws, so thoroughly check their paws when you arrive home. Some dogs have relatively soft paws. If so, it may be a good idea to shorten their walks through this cold spell.
