UK heatwave can cause dogs to suffer with heat stroke

Heat Stroke Prevention & Cure

Heat Stroke

What Symptoms should you be aware of?

All dogs have sweat glands in their paws but only a few so they also pant to cool down. If the weather is unusually hot you may notice the onset of heat stroke.

1/ Dog Pants excessively

2/ your dog may just lay down and refuse to move

3/ they may limp on one of their front legs. (This could be because the heart is working overtime and is causing pain when they walk)

PRECAUTIONS

Do not take your dog out when its overly hot/ try walking first thing in the morning
Take a drink at all times of cold water and offer on the walk.
Don’t play ball games with your dog if it’s very hot as they will not be able to cool down quick enough.
Groom double coated dogs and remove all undercoat this will keep them cool.
Clipper your dogs slightly shorter in hot weather

ACTION

Don’t Panic!
Away from home
If you’re away from home find a cool shaded place and lie your dog down.
Offer a drink and poor cool water over its neck to cool down quickly.
If by water let them paddle don’t allow dog, to dive in as this could cause a heart attack. Slowly scoop water and put over neck.

At Home

Bring in and place a fan near your dog offer water and place a cool wet flannel over their neck.
If you have a hose-pipe just put hose over the neck for approx. 5 mins then take inside

Heat exhaustion – in a car.

THERE IS NO REASON WHY A DOG SHOULD BE LEFT IN A CAR.
A dog will dehydrate and die in 10 minutes in a car with the temperatures we are experiencing.
If you intend on leaving a dog for any reason in a car the windows should be wound right down and the boot open parked in the shade and put your dog in a lockable cage with padlocks to prevent theft.

DONT FORGET DOGS NEED SUN CREAM TOO ESPECIALLY WHITE,LIGHT DOGS
